Printing service is used by most companies for different reasons such as marketing and corporate communications. Offset printing is the most commonly used printing technique and knowing about it is therefore helpful and essential.

The users and the printers like offset printing because of its cost effectiveness for printing of large number of prints. That is why for bulk orders any good printing company would advise you to opt for offset printing.

Offset printing uses oil based ink, which does not mix with water. Its name comes from the fact that in this method, images are not transported directly from the plates to the paper but this is done using rubber blankets as a medium.

The first step is preparing the images. Film negatives were used in the earlier times for making images and then duplicating them to aluminum based printing plates. In the current times, the printers can use the image setting system for preparing the plates directly. After this, the plate is attached to a cylinder with the proper side facing upwards. Then the water and ink are spread on the image plates, in that order. The ink is spread over the image and to prevent it from spilling, a thin layer of water is put over the remaining part of the plate.

After being painted with the ink, the image is put on a rubber blanket which is on a different cylinder, leading the image to be inversed. Afterwards, sheets of paper of desired dimensions are put together and the rubber blankets transmit the image to the sheets on a third cylinder, where it comes out as the correct side.

The task of printing is finished by the printing company by consolidating the printed sheets using staples or glue or in any other way as per the needs of the client.

The most popular kind of offset printing uses photosensitive chemicals and photographic techniques in transferring pictures and typing from master copy to printing plates. The source materials may be the actual photographic print and typeset text. With the presence of computers and digital images, master copy are now data in a digital publishing system.
