The latest in social media options is Google’s Buzz and while they may be the leader on the web, the word is that this service needs a lot of work to become a serious competitor in the current market. With top ranking social media sites like Facebook, My Space and Twitter on top, there is no room for anything less than functional with competition like this.
Google’s Buzz is used in conjunction with their popular Gmail internet mail service. If you already use Gmail, and the majority of your online friends do as well, then using Buzz seems like a logical choice to make. If this is not the case, or you are already very entrenched in Facebook, My Space or Twitter, it may be a lot to ask for you to start using yet another social networking site.
The complaints started out as soon as Buzz came out onto the scene with security issues and user control issues, because different than early social media web sites, Buzz wasn’t admitting users to filter who was able to get in touch with them. Evidently, that is something that user’s felt was essential.
These issues surprised almost everyone who was familiar with Google, since they have an outstanding history of launching new products that work well and have almost no issues. Some questioned why the company even released the product at all, since it was clearly not ready for use by the general public, and the negative backlash from the release did have an impact on the company’s reputation. At the same time many SEO management companies were hoping that the release of Buzz would make SEO easier, however it turns out that this is not the case either. Google’s existing real time search engine is quicker, and provided better results then Buzz currently does.
While the buzz on Buzz has been less than ideal so far, there is no reason to believe the Google will not improve the product and address all of the issues that have been identified so far. With the power of Google behind Buzz, it still has the potential to be a significant player in the social networking arena, but Google will have to work very hard to convince users to switch to Buzz from Facebook, Twitter and My Space.
