Many people ponder whether it’s better to optimise a site to get free search engine rankings or to rely on PPC ads from Google Adwords.

My answer is always the same – if you can profitably generate website traffic with both, it’s best to do both to generate maximum returns.

Remember though, paid search engines and free search engines are entirely different animals.

We’ll take a closer look so you can clearly understand what the pros and cons are for both the free search engines (SEO) and the Pay-Per-Click (PPC) option on paid search engines.

SEO vs. PPC

Using pay-per-click is effective for a number of reasons:

1. It’s a quick way to drive targeted traffic to your site. It’s possible to have visitors at your site within 10 minutes of starting your campaign.

2. You have total control over where you send your visitors (e.g. when a person searches for “red widgets,” you can send them to a page that talks about “red widgets”. When you use search engine optimisation, the search engines make the decision for you.

3 You can test different offers, copy, and headlines in order to see which combination works best.

4 You can drive traffic for a variety of different keywords, but with SEO you’re better off targeting just a few keywords.

5. Your website doesn’t have to be ‘search engine friendly’ for PPC to work. (Websites built with ‘Flash’ are notoriously UN-friendly to search engines, but they don’t necessarily affect PPC traffic.)

6. Rather than worrying about each search engines ranking formula, you’ll be optimising for conversion results.

7. You can easily change positions on the page in order to find the best Return On Investment.

8. The changes to the rules of PPC search engines are usually less often and less significant to the changes that take place with the SEO rules.

SEO traffic is good because…

1. It’s absolutely free!

2. You will be able to generate free traffic for terms that would be too costly to bid on using PPC.

3. The long-term Return On Investment is often better than Pay Per Click. It’s slower at first, and the risk is higher if you don’t know what you?re doing, but it’s cheaper in the long term.

4. Once you have earned good rankings, it’s pretty easy to keep them with very little additional effort.

5. You can build a great deal of momentum, allowing you to dominate your market while competitors go broke trying to compete with you using PPC.

To conclude, both PPC and SEO are useful to any online lead generation you are doing for any business website.

It seems that the field of Search Engine Optimisation can leave you frustrated, waste your time, and blow your budget all at the same time because of all the half truths and misinformation.
