Great movies come in all various genres. Movies entertain us and we adore them. Every movie is good in someone’s eyes and of course there are a few movies that seem to be collectively loved.
Addicted to Love – This movie is a gloomy comedy where we see an ex-boyfriend, and an ex-girlfriend spying on their past partners. They find themselves teamed together, with the young lady planning acts of retribution for her previous significant other. Meg Ryan, Matthew Broderick, Kelly Preston, and Tcheky Karyo star. (1997 dark comedy directed by Griffin Dunne)
Number One with a Bullet – Carradine and Williams do well in this somewhat standard action motion picture where we have aggressive investigators out to oust a drug kingpin. Cast includes Robert Carradine, Billy Dee Williams, Valerie Bertinelli, Peter Graves, Doris Roberts, and Bobby DiCicco. (101 minutes,’87)
The Prince and the Showgirl – Reasonably decent but slow moving comedy of saucy American show gal Monroe being courted by Prince Regent of Carpathia (Olivier) throughout the’11 coronation of George V. Filmed in England, with marvelous performances by Monroe and Olivier. Cast includes Marilyn Monroe, Laurence Olivier, Sybil Thorndike, Jeremy Spencer, and Richard Wattis. (117 minutes,’57)
Aladdin – Disney’s animated Arabian Days tale is refined through the sensibility of an old Warner Bros. animation, as Aladdin summons up a Genie who’s overflowing with shtick. Williams’ hilarious fast fire patter forms the centerpiece of this otherwise conventional tale, colorfully (and tunefully) shown. Cast includes Voices of Scott Weinger, Robin Williams, Linda Larkin, Jonathan Freeman, Frank Welker, Gilbert Gottfried, Douglas Seale and the harmonizing voices of Brad Kand and Lea Salonga. (90 minutes,’92)
Borderline – Unusual thriller comedy in which L.A. cop Trevor tries to accumulate proof contrary to cunning drug smuggler Burr when mixing with hard gentleman MacMurray in Mexico. Starts out favorably, although eventually slows down in absurdity. Burr makes a lucid scoundrel. The cast includes Fred MacMurray, Claire Trevor, Raymond Burr, Jose Torvay, Morris Ankrum, and Roy Roberts. (88 minutes,’50)
Afurika Monogatari – Guide Sayer crashes his airplane in wilds of Africa and comes upon a game preserve. Even old Jimmy is dull. The film was filmed in Kenya. Cast includes James Stewart, Philip Sayer, Eleanora Vallone, and Heekura Simba. (120 minutes,’81)
The Bourne Ultimatum – In the third film of the sequence, Jason Bourne is still being sought after by those who had trained him into the greatest assassin that he is. Having lost his memory when almost being murdered, Bourne is retracing his past to try to realize who he was, and why everybody wants him dead. All his skills are put to the test, as the C.I.A. is persistent in its effort to have him eliminated. Starring Matt Damon and Julia Stiles.
